SAP Operations: Prices are Plummeting
Article by Ralph Treitz
There are no alternatives to outsourcing, from a financial point of view.
There are three options for running SAP software: The most common solution is in-house. In that variant, all responsibility - from hardware to user support - lies in the responsibility of the user. The second variant, which is to separate out IT as a separate business entity and to give the SAP operations to it, is rapidly losing popularity. IT firms often have to follow the guidelines of the company to such a high degree, that they often have a hard time attaining a high level of industrialization. At this point, IT service providers should be introduced, who take on areas that are not directly connected to the daily business - the IT center, the SAP system, and SAP Basis support. In addition, this third operating model offers real cost advantages.

Without a well-thought-out process, outsourcing SAP will not work. Also if the outsourcing strategy is insufficient or badly defined, that can be more detrimental for the end user than just leaving the operations in-house. And using outsourcing brings with it quality improvements: Particularly with respect to IT security, availability, and scalability, a mid-sized company with an in-house SAP set-up cannot attain the level that can be achieved through an external service provider, at comparable costs.
