Sizing Systems
The supposedly easy job of sizing new systems is not as easy as it looks. Don’t leave this task to hardware manufacturers alone.
Usually the hardware provider takes on the job of actually sizing the system. When new installations are carried out, SAP’s Quick Sizer is usually called on during changes, and usually, using the general rule: “x% more SAP for the new release”.
Sizing is a lot more accurate when based on the measurement of a system which takes actual use as its starting point. In such cases, the experience of VMS identifies entirely individual needs.
In one case in point, we were able to save one company from having to spend a lot of money upgrading its hardware, because the application also ran with the desired performance after the release change – just as VMS had predicted.
At another company, we were able to demonstrate that the planned new acquisitions would not be enough.
Finally, hardware simply can’t solve all performance problems. This was confirmed to us by a client who approximately doubled the hardware capacity in a rollout, only to find that performance had not improved. Only targeted tuning by VMS brought the desired success.
